AT LAST!!! A fresh, new twist to the Z.A!! And DAMN is it good!!! Mike Carey (author of the book and screenplay) is AMAZING!!!
There’s a new zombie virus and it has a name, Ophiocordyceps Unilateralis. Like other zombie viruses it is spread through blood and saliva. Here’s a twist, it is also spreads (and started from) by spores with an unknown trigger. Did you guys forget about those zombie ants? SPORES!! Evolution!!!
Either you live in a highly guarded area, or you roam around alone or in small packs out in the wasteland. If you are out in the wasteland then you are a Junker. The guarded area that our group (I will introduce them in one minute) is headed for is called The Beacon.
In this story zombies are called “The Hungries”. There is a facility ran by the military, and created by The Beacon that is called Hotel Echo, it houses a special breed of Hungry. These Hungries still have their minds under control…..until they pick up human scent, then the virus takes over and they hunt and devour that human. Every one of these special Hungries is a child; the soldiers of Hotel Echo go out scouting, and bring these children back to the facility to be studied by the live-in scientist. There are also teachers at Hotel Echo, that hold ‘normal’ classes.
There is a special one of these children zombies named Melanie. Melanie is a genius. The on-hand scientist also terminates these unique Hungries when she is finished studying them, or whenever she deems it necessary. It is Melanie’s time to go. EXCEPT one of the teachers does not have the same opinion, and interrupts! At this time BOOM, Hotel Echo falls under attack by Junkers, and Hungries. Now these three are stuck with each other to escape unscathed! During their escape they are teamed up with Sgt Parks and Pvt Gallagher. The gang decides to head for The Beacon for sanctuary. They muzzle Melanie for their own safety.
On their journey they come across the abandoned Rosalid Franklin Lab. This is a mobile lab. The scientist, who is dying, decides to do some experiments on samples found in the lab and when alone, decides to drive the lab off to hiding. With Melanie’s help the group finds where the lab is.
I will end here because I do not want to give the whole story away. It is so brilliant though. I’m still wearing this head strap to keep my jaw up, because my jaw certainly dropped!
A new generation is born.
